Energy Saving Tips for Cold Weather
Cold Weather’s Coming!
With the Farmer’s Almanac foreseeing a cold winter in North Central Florida, temperatures may fall and heating systems may run for longer periods of time. For cold days this winter, follow these energy-savings tips to conserve energy and to save money:
WINTER ENERGY SAVING TIPS
- Lower your thermostat to the lowest comfortable setting. If you have a heat pump, adjust your thermostat in small increments to keep the heat strip from turning on. This will keep your house comfortable while minimizing the use of the less energy-efficient resistance heat strip.
- Clean or replace filters every month. Dirty filters can increase operating costs by 20 percent.
- Sleep with heavier blankets (e.g. down comforters)–for you, your children and your pets; then set your thermostat back 5 degrees. The lowered setting reduces the length of time the heating system operates throughout the night.
- Do you have a chimney? Close your fireplace damper when not in use.
- Keep curtains and shades closed at night and on cloudy days.
- When entertaining, lower the thermostat a degree or two before the guests arrive. The added body heat of guests will warm your home.
